Why invest in VISTA's dozer training curriculum?

DozerLogic™: Designed to deliver bottom-line benefits to your mine

VISTA's Dozer curriculum is designed to deliver millions of dollars of added value to your mine's bottom line, through increased productivity and reduced operating costs. It can help you:

  • Shorten the time it takes your mine to prepare new dozer operators for on boarding.
  • Improve the safety and productivity of your new dozer operators.
  • Reduce the incidence of operating practices that can shorten dozer life and can cause unnecessary downtime.
  • Help new dozer operators see how their performance affects the rest of the mine's production operations.
  • Establish a benchmark level of skills for new and experienced dozer operators, which you can improve upon over time.
  • More quickly identify those operators with natural skills, as well as those whose skills aren't adequate to the challenges of operating a dozer at your site.

Because DozerLogic™ is web-based, you can deploy it quickly throughout your mine operations, using a centralized Learning Management System (LMS).

The bottom line is that DozerLogic™ can help in the reduction of costs when the shovel pits and dump sites are not maintained properly, or when the lifts and dikes are not constructed the correct way the first time. And let's not forget the cost of possible human life when expected to push down an overhanging face. All helping you to grow the bottom line through improved operator productivity - quickly paying for itself.

Benefits of the blended learning model

You didn't learn to ride a bike by viewing PowerPoint slides. You learned by doing. It's the same way with adult learning. To be effective, training needs to combine multiple methods, resources and learning experiences - in other words, blended learning.

According to a recent study entitled Alternative Trades Training: Best Practices Across Canada, produced by Solvig Norman Open School BC and the Lindsay Langill Industry Training Authority of British Columbia, Canada, "a blended approach of combining face-to-face training and self-paced/independent learning is the most effective approach to delivering practical skills-based training."

A recent study conducted by Brandon Hall, a leading firm in the e-learning space, showed that over 70% of respondents indicated that blended learning produced better learning outcomes than either face-to-face training alone or e-learning alone.

Blended learning

Easily accommodates different learning styles.

  • Incorporates structured coaching, which provide trainees with immediate feedback.
  • Establishes a framework that encourages self-directed learning.
  • Provides coaches with assessment data, which enables them to focus their efforts where they're needed the most.
  • Provides consistent instruction; all new operators receive the same critical safety messages.

Does your current operator training program do all of this?

VISTA DozerLogic™ on-the-job training activities and job aids

As trainees learn dozer operation skills in the training modules and through the task model videos, a series of structured on-the-job activities help them to apply what they have learned. On-the-job activities included in the DozerLogic™ dozer curriculum include:

  • General Skills
  • Pre-use Inspection
  • Controls
  • Start Up and Shut Down
  • System Testing
  • Operational Skill Building Exercises

Trainers are enabled with coaching guides, which help them to structure these on-the-job activities; they also include space for recording operator assessments and notes. Checklists provide documentation that the trainee has successfully completed each on-the-job exercises.

VISTA DozerLogic™ on-the-job training aids

On-the-job training aids help operators retain what they've learned

These materials include:

  • Laminated illustration of the dozer that depicts pre-use inspection points and items to be checked at each location
  • Laminated illustrations of the operator control panel of the dozer, with call-outs for all controls and status/indicator lights
  • Laminated illustrations and uses of the switches
  • Laminated charts summarizing the start-up, shut-down and system test procedures for each dozer

Laminated OJT materials are designed for durability in rugged mine environments. Dozer operators can keep them in the cab and refer to them as needed, long after the training is over. VISTA also can produce on-the-job training (OJT) aids that provide additional training for specific models of dozers used at your facility, if needed.

VISTA's done it again!

Now even better with Task Model videos.

DozerLogic™ uses the same proven unique, task-driven approach to operator training as our award winning TruckLogic™ curriculum. It again integrates web-based training; a simulator if you have one, and structured on-the-job training aids to help ensure trainee knowledge retention. In addition, we added a new tool - task model videos. This unique design helps your mine reach new levels of productivity and safety while helping new and experienced dozer operators get proper bulldozer certifications. During a DozerLogic™ train-the-trainer session, we help you deploy a training methodology that can be delivered faster, with more consistency and at a lower cost than traditional instructor-led and on-the-job training.

DozerLogic™ is instructionally designed to:

  • Improve safety on the mine
  • On-board new and experienced dozer operator trainees quickly
  • Help new operators reach their production targets quickly and safely
  • Minimize reactive maintenance and improve dozer life
  • Improve the consistency and overall level of operator performance
  • Reduce the impact of training on production
  • Reduce training costs

DozerLogic™ includes:

  • 25 web-based training (WBT) lessons contain over 1000 screens of interactive, multimedia-enhanced content, which provide in-depth training in basic operating principles, best practices and potential problem scenarios.
  • Embedded "check your knowledge" quizzes measure what each student has learned. Test results can be stored in a learning management system and used to tailor coaching to each individual trainee.
  • The ability to add affordable customized wrap around training for your simulator, if you have one. VISTA has designed DozerLogic™ training to be integrated with simulators to help the operator gain experience in the core skills of operating in a safe environment.
  • Task model videos are used because the coach cannot ride along in a dozer like they would in a haul truck. These videos have been designed to give the trainee both an in-the-cab and bird's eye view of the tasks being done by an experienced dozer operator.
  • On-the-job training (OJT) materials: Structured activities reinforce what trainees have learned in the online learning sessions. The field trainer versions of these OJT tools contain checklists and space for recording notes and operator assessments.
  • Laminated diagrams: Laminated diagrams of dozer control layouts and pre-use inspection steps help operators retain what they've learned.

All of the elements of this training curriculum have been instructionally designed to meet the needs of adult learners. The blended learning model employed by DozerLogic™ helps your new workers learn how to operate a dozer and retain more of what they've learned. That, in turn, means less retraining in the field and faster onboarding.

How does your existing operator-training program compare?

Traditional classroom training is no longer adequate to meet the needs of operators of today's sophisticated tasks of a dozer. It's not enough to fill the heads of new trainees with information, and then expect them to operate complex production assets safely and productively. Your operator-training program may be limiting your ability to improve productivity and safety in your mine. Do your dozer operators understand how their performance affects the mine's overall productivity and profitability? Dozers may perform tasks in the shovel pit, dump area, haul road, dikes and above the shovel. All of the tasks performed in these areas affect the mine's bottom line.

Dozer Training Challenges

  • Training period is 12-18 months; significant number of trainees get to final location "above the shovel" and withdraw from the training
  • Trainees fail to understand who is in control and what their responsibilities are in different locations
  • Trainees are over-reliant on radio communication
  • Coach must coach from the ground level; no jump seat in the dozer
  • Several critical tasks performed seasonally or sporadically

Simulators

If you already have a mining equipment simulator you know that it provides new hires with consistent training, because everyone works through the same hand/eye coordination and related exercises, and they do so in a logical order. This enables you to establish performance benchmarks and elevate the proficiency of all of your equipment operators.

You can also use a simulator to pre-screen new hires and identify those with the greatest natural aptitude for operating equipment.

But there can be challenges if using a simulator as your core equipment training tool:

  • Most trainees do not have any idea of what to do once they are in the seat of the simulator
  • The simulator can become a bottleneck - Only one person at a time can operate the simulator
  • Simulators typically teach the muscle memory but not the "why", Adult learners want to know why they are doing something
  • Simulators don't typically provide the trainee a "big picture" view of how productivity can make or break a mine - the result can be an unproductive operator who does not understand their part in the operation of the mine

VISTA TruckLogic™, DozerLogic™, and GraderLogic™ curricula wrap around your existing simulator, helping to prepare the trainee to better understand the big picture and what they are about to experience in the simulator. Contact VISTA at info@vista-training.com for details.

  • Truck inspection and blind area identification

  • Start-up, testing and operating the truck

  • Drive-by dumping on a lift

  • Back-in dumping and dumping at the dump pocket

  • Loading at the shovel (cab-side and blind-side back up)

Trainers are enabled with coaching guides, which help them to structure these on-the-job activities; they also include space for recording operator assessments and notes. Checklists provide documentation that the trainee has successfully completed each on-the-job exercise.

Machine-specific on-the-job training materials

VISTA also produces on-the-job training (OJT) aids that provide additional training for specific models of large haul trucks. These materials include:

  • A trainee guide that covers pre-operation inspection and start-up/shutdown procedures for each truck model

  • Laminated illustrations of each truck that depicts walk-around inspection points and items to be checked at each location

  • Laminated charts summarizing the start-up, shutdown and system test procedures for each truck

  • Laminated illustrations of the operator control panel of each truck, with call-outs for all controls and status/indicator lights

  • Laminated illustrations of the graphical symbols utilized on each truck's control panel

  • Laminated charts that summarize the function of each of the truck's controls

Laminated OJT materials are designed for durability in rugged mine environments. Truck operators can keep them in the cab and refer to them as needed, long after the training is over.

TruckLogic™ is a revolutionary new model of haul truck operator training, which integrates web-based training, simulation and on-the-job training tools. It is designed to help your mine to train your new haul truck operators faster and at a lower cost than traditional instructor-led training, while also improving safety in the mine. This unique approach to operator training is a first in the mining industry.

TruckLogic™ is instructionally designed to:

  • On-board new haul truck operator trainees quickly
  • Help new operators reach their production targets quickly and safely
  • Minimize reactive maintenance and improve haul truck life
  • Improve the consistency and overall level of operator performance
  • Reduce the impact of training on production
  • Reduce training costs

TruckLogic™ includes:

  • 16 computer-based training (CBT) lessons containing over 800 screens of interactive, multimedia-enhanced content, which provide in-depth training in basic operating principles, best practices and potential problem scenarios
  • Embedded "check your knowledge" quizzes measure what each student has learned; test results can be stored in a learning management system and used to tailor coaching to each trainee.
  • An affordable PC-based simulator from VISTA helps trainees gain experience in the core skills of operating a mining truck productively, in a safe environment.
  • On-the-job training (OJT) materials: Structured ride-along activities reinforce what trainees have learned in the CBT sessions and the simulator. The field trainer versions of these OJT tools contain checklists and space for recording notes and operator assessments.
  • Laminated diagrams: Laminated diagrams of haul truck control layouts and pre-use inspection steps help operators to retain what they've learned.

All of the elements of this training curriculum have been instructionally designed to meet the needs of adult learners. The blended learning model employed by TruckLogic™ helps your new haul truck operators to retain more of what they've learned. That, in turn, means less retraining in the field and faster on-boarding.

How does your existing operator training program compare?

Traditional classroom training is no longer adequate to meet the needs of operators of today's sophisticated, multi-million dollar haul trucks. It's not enough to fill the heads of new trainees with information, and then expect them to operate complex production assets safely and productively. Your operator training program may be limiting your ability to improve productivity and safety in your mine.

Do your haul truck operators understand how their performance impacts the mine's overall productivity and profitability? Operators who dump loads outside target areas, fail to position accurately at the shovel or who inadvertently damage or destroy expensive, hard-to-get truck tires can have a significant negative impact on your bottom line. A single safety incident can kill a mine's productivity for days

How do you know if your new operators have retained what they learned? Are you willing to risk your mine's productivity, profitability and safety record if they haven't?

Haul truck simulator from VISTA Training

Simulator provides critical hands-on training for as little as US$20,000 (Plus hardware)

Simulator training significantly reduces the need to use production trucks for training. New operators can become proficient with basic truck operation and controls in a safe environment, which helps them to be more productive once they graduate to an actual haul truck.

The cost-effective, PC-based enhanced simulator from VISTA presents hands-on exercises that are based upon the lessons learned in the training modules. Trainees gain experience in the core skills of operating a mining truck - without the risk of injury or machine damage. It's also a great way to assess the skills of trainees and to identify those who may not be suited for the job - before you put them behind the wheel of a large haul truck.

Consistent Training

A simulator provides your new hires with consistent training, because everyone works through the same exercises, and they do so in a logical order. This enables you to establish performance benchmarks and elevate the proficiency of all of your truck operators.

You can also use a simulator to pre-screen new hires and identify those with the greatest natural aptitude for operating equipment.

Measured Feedback

For each simulator task, key performance indicators measure how quickly and carefully each exercise is performed. In addition to cycle times, the simulator measures data associated with driving efficiency and safety.

The simulator generates a wealth of data about each trainee's performance.

Curriculum Integration

The VISTA enhanced simulator can be used with a full multi-day learning curriculum, providing a powerful combination of teaching by showing and learning by doing.
